Mr. Potato Head Church

For those of us who grew up in the fifties and sixties we are well aware of that iconic toy, Mr. Potato Head. Hugely successful over the course of its sixty-year reign, it is a plastic-bodied potato into which various features could be stuck to characterize the object into various facial distinctions or personalities. Part of the fun is mischievously placing the parts in the wrong areas for amusement. The toy has gone through many iterations and characters as a result of its success. (more…)

Emancipation Proclamation

It came and departed with such little pomp and circumstance most of us were unaware that January 1, 2013 marked the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation. It was back in 1863, during the raging contention of the great Civil War that Abraham Lincoln issued this monumental document which stated, “All persons held as slaves within any state or designated part of the state in rebellion against the United States are and hence forward shall be free.” This simple piece of paper granted freedom and a source of hope to the nearly 4 million slaves held captive in the Southern states. Where was God?

I am pretty sure that most people are aware of the tragedy that took place at the Sandy Hook Elementary School, when a disgruntled youth made his way onto the grounds and began indiscriminately taking the lives of young children and teachers. I have not heard an acknowledgment of the existence of evil in such unison for quite some time. But in the mêlée, I have often hard the cries, “Where was God in this terrible ordeal?” (more…)

User Friendly or Grumpy Pants?

My cousin’s granddaughter has a new pet and he’s either called Pickles or Grumpy Pants depending on his reaction to what’s going on around him. And his reaction affects others—he’s a hedgehog. He can keep his quills safely down where they won’t harm anyone or he can roll into a ball, covering himself in all directions with sharp, pointy little spikes. And that can cause some fairly serious damage. She’s hoping he settles down in his new home because now he often reacts in hurtful ways that aren’t too pleasant to those around him. (more…)
