Sweet Tooth

Perhaps, one the greatest ironies growing up as a dentist’s son was the fact that I had an incredible sweet tooth and I was surrounded by vast amount of sugar. I craved untold amounts of sugar. I knew where the hard candy bowl was, and where the Pop Tarts and donuts were. Oreos, soda and Frosted Flakes were the order of the day. We made home-made ice cream with my mom’s home-made chocolate sauce which was unbelievable with its chunks of delectable goo. (I am sure it was off the charts health wise, but hey what did we know? It was the 60’s). The good news is that in the end I ended up with only two cavities. The sad part is that I still have an insatiable sweet tooth. (more…)

What in the world is an invocation? There has been a lot of concern over the last few weeks over this one little word in our little town.
In the general sense of the word it is the act of calling upon a deity for aid, protection or inspiration. The word means to call, or utilize the voice to summons someone. In the simplest of terms it is an appeal to deity for God’s presence usually at the beginning of a religious service or public ceremony. Specifically, in Christian circles the implication is to call upon Yahweh, using His specific name, and in the name of Jesus, His Son. This is an action that has existed for ages in the public and religious sector, but is it encouraged in Scripture? (more…)

Right, Free Will and Legislation

The Declaration of Independence of the United States asserts, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” I don’t believe any American would debate the assertion that we have had conferred upon us “certain unalienable rights”, but what exactly does “unalienable rights” mean, and is that definition biblically sustainable? Romans: The Gospel Road

Bishop Creek Community Church invites you to join us as we take a trip along The Gospel Road. Paul has meticulously detailed the essence of the Gospel in his magnum opus of Christian theology in his letter to the Romans and we have the benefit of reading their mail some 2000 years later. What a journey we are privileged to experience that leads to the foot of the cross, and to salvation.

Change is a Choice

Change can be deadly when you’re in school and conformity is the key to survival. At least that’s how I remember it. It was such a small thing, but whenever mom decided to “trim” my bangs the trauma was unbelievable. I suppose in elementary school everything becomes unbelievably traumatic and every little change a major challenge. I’m not sure what her point of reference was, but I’m surprised I don’t have a permanent kink in my neck from trying to create an allusion of level. To this day I’m sure I had a flashing arrow above my head just in case someone failed to notice mom’s handiwork. (more…)

No Other Name

I remember as a kid in grade school often waiting for someone to open doors around campus, either a door to the classroom, to the cafeteria or to the utility closet which held the sports equipment. We had to wait because someone who had the correct key had to open the door for us. Usually it was a man in a grey shirt who would come rolling up on one of those little golf carts bringing a lump of keys on a ring, one of which would grant entry into that secured location. He would try many keys, for out of that entire conglomeration, it was one that he was looking for, as only one would work. (more…)
